bubbly follow up; domestic sparklies

This SF gate article picks up where the NYT article last week left off. It rates a number of domestic bruts and blancs de blancs. A shorter list but useful if you're looking to make a purchase without paying champagne prices.

How did you get my name? That's what they call me. Weird. Your blog makes me hungry and thirsty.

hey matt,

what is the deal with proseco? how come i never heard about it until last year, but now i see it everywhere? how does it relate to spumantes?

yours,

Prosecco is a grape variety and appellation name for a white sparkling wine produced in the Veneto region of Italy. It is generally made bubbly through tank carbonation as opposed to the champagne method, making it less expensive to produce and cheaper on the shelf.

Spumante means 'sparkling' (as opposed to 'frizzante' which is only semi-sparkling) so technically a prosecco is a spumanti. Asti Spumante, another well known Italian sparkling wine, is made with moscato from Asti, a town in Piedmont. It's name literally means "sparkling from Asti."

As for you never having heard of prosecco and its sudden popularity, maybe you just weren't paying attention or perhaps it has become more fashionable recently.

As for what to do with it, many italians begin a meal with prosecco and appetizers. It is well suited for this role given it's refreshing sparkle and touch of sweetness which whets the appetite.
